Iona University Names Dr. Daniel Thiery as New Honors Program Director

Iona University has announced the appointment of Dr. Daniel E. Thiery, Ph.D., as the new Honors Program director. Dr. Thiery expressed his gratitude for the opportunity, stating, "During my undergrad years, the enthusiasm, commitment, and insights of the Honors Director and Honors Faculty inspired my intellectual curiosity and drive to grow wiser, not simply in my major of history, but in many fields of inquiry which contemplate and illuminate the amazing, astounding, saddening, sobering, befuddling, bemusing, beautiful, and beatific in this world."

Tricia Mulligan, Ph.D., the provost and senior vice president for Academic Affairs, congratulated Dr. Thiery on his appointment, highlighting his enthusiasm and commitment to student engagement. Mulligan expressed excitement about the collaborative journey ahead, aiming to empower students to pursue their passions and foster a culture of lifelong learning.

T.J. Moretti, Ph.D., associate provost, also shared his confidence in Dr. Thiery, stating, "Given his vision, commitment, and compassion, I have no doubt that he will inspire Honors students from all backgrounds to expand their ways of thinking, to pursue excellence, and to lead with heart."

Dr. Thiery, a Professor of Medieval History and Fellow of the Royal Historical Society, has been actively involved in the Honors Program at Iona University since 2003. In his new role as Honors Program director, he will focus on enhancing recruitment, retention, student engagement, and assessment at Iona. Dr. Thiery plans to collaborate with student clubs, organizations, and Honors student-leaders to create on-campus events that encourage students to learn outside the traditional classroom setting.

Additionally, Dr. Thiery will lead the development of a new core curriculum for the Honors Program, aiming to involve more faculty members from across the University. He expressed his hopes for strengthening the bonds within the Iona community through various initiatives, including the creation of a new Honors service-learning committee.
