Public Safety Leaders at St. John’s University, Denise Vencak-Toner and Lynda O’Malley, are dedicated to ensuring the safety and security of the campus community. Ms. Vencak-Toner emphasized the importance of their role, stating, “We are often the go-to people when something happens. We are often the first face people see when they arrive and the last person they see when they leave.”

The department, led by Vencak-Toner and Dr. O’Malley, oversees a team of approximately 200 officers and 100 student employees, focusing on personal safety, fire safety, environmental health, and vehicular issues. Dr. O’Malley highlighted the department's commitment to keeping the community informed and safe, stating, “We want people to be informed so they can stay safe and be aware of what is happening in their surroundings.”

To enhance campus safety, Public Safety has implemented various initiatives, including the redeployment of the campus shuttle van and the launch of the LiveSafe app. The department also utilizes around 1,500 cameras on the Queens campus for security and investigative purposes.

Collaboration with student groups is a key aspect of maintaining campus safety. Dr. O’Malley emphasized the importance of transparency and educating students about the range of services offered by Public Safety. The department also ensures a visible presence during high-traffic events such as basketball games and commencement ceremonies.

Ms. Vencak-Toner highlighted the challenges of managing external guests and maintaining security during peak events, such as graduations. Despite the demanding nature of their roles, both leaders expressed pride in their work and acknowledged the importance of their team. Dr. O’Malley reflected on their unique positions, stating, “Having two women in top security positions is probably unique, but we do not want it to be about ourselves. We would not be able to function without the people who work with us.”
