The Diocese of Brooklyn is in mourning after the announcement of the death of Reverend John J. Garkowski, a retired priest of the Diocese. Most Reverend Robert J. Brennan, Bishop of Brooklyn, expressed his regrets as he shared the news of Father Garkowski's passing.
Father Garkowski, who was born on January 18, 1939, and ordained to the priesthood on May 28, 1966, passed away on Saturday, March 23, 2024. During his time in service, Father Garkowski dedicated himself to the community as the Parochial Vicar of several parishes in the Diocese of Brooklyn, including Our Lady of Perpetual Help in South Ozone Park, Saint Pancras in Glendale, and Saint Bartholomew in Elmhurst.

Father Garkowski will be remembered as a member of the Priests’ Purgatorial Society, and the community is asked to pray for the repose of his soul and for the comfort of his family and friends during this difficult time. May he rest in the peace of Christ, the Risen Lord.
