Pope Francis has appointed Bishop Gerard Battersby, 63, to lead the Diocese of La Crosse, Wisconsin. The announcement was made on March 19, 2024. Bishop Battersby, currently serving as auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of Detroit, will succeed Bishop William Callahan, O.F.M. Conv.

In a statement, Bishop Battersby expressed his joy at the appointment, saying, “It is with joy that I received the news that the Holy Father had named me the 11th Bishop of the Diocese of La Crosse, Wisconsin.” He also shared his anticipation and hope for this new chapter in his ministry, stating, “The Risen One has bid me to follow him to western Wisconsin, to the banks of the Mighty Mississippi. I leave with hope and anticipatory joy.”

Archbishop Vigneron of the Archdiocese of Detroit praised Bishop Battersby's years of service and ministry, saying, “Like a truly joyful, missionary disciple, he has always faithfully answered the call to go forth in new ways to share the Good News of Christ.” The Archbishop also conveyed the prayers and gratitude of the Detroit community as Bishop Battersby embarks on his new role in La Crosse.

Reflecting on his time in Detroit, Bishop Battersby shared his deep love and gratitude for the Archdiocese and its people, saying, “As the Psalmist said of Jerusalem, I say of my hometown of Detroit and the Archdiocese of Detroit: I love her very stones.” He expressed appreciation for the support and training he received in Detroit, assuring the community that they will remain in his heart as he transitions to his new mission.

In conclusion, Bishop Battersby emphasized the importance of faith and witness in his new role, stating, “Wherever He bids us to follow him, let us remember our foundational truths, which gird our understanding and make firm our path: He is Risen, He is Lord, and we are His witnesses.”

Bishop Gerard Battersby will be formally installed as the eleventh bishop of the Diocese of La Crosse on May 20, 2024, at the Cathedral of St. Joseph the Workman in La Crosse.
