St. John’s University’s global mission and spirit were on full display around the Queens, NY, campus during the week of November 16, 2023. Students, faculty, administrators, and staff participated in various events showcasing international speakers, crash courses in foreign languages, special activities, and a luncheon honoring outstanding faculty and students with global engagement.

One of the standout events during this week was the visit to the United Nations in Manhattan, NY, sponsored by the University’s Office of Global Programs. Ose Imhansoloeva, an international graduate student in The Peter J. Tobin College of Business, expressed her enthusiasm, stating, "As someone passionate about international affairs, I eagerly embraced the opportunity provided by St. John’s University to visit the United Nations."

The group from St. John’s was given a guided tour of the UN headquarters, learning about its history, current initiatives under Secretary General António Guterres, and witnessing various gifts and art installations promoting peace and collaboration. Ose reflected on the experience, saying, "I gained insights into the UN’s structure and the intricate dynamics of international diplomacy, and how countries collaborate to find common ground, negotiate agreements, and address global differences."

Another student, Peter Shen from The Lesley H. and William L. Collins College of Professional Studies, shared his awe at seeing the General Assembly in action, noting, "I had only seen UN meetings on TV before. It’s really amazing! This visit also reminded me that peace does not come easily and should never be settled by force if it can be negotiated."

The visit left a lasting impact on the delegation from St. John’s University. Ose Imhansoloeva expressed her newfound inspiration, stating, "This experience left me inspired to play a more active role in addressing the world’s most pressing problems in my own capacity."

The visit to the United Nations served as a reminder of the importance of global cooperation and diplomacy, reinforcing St. John’s commitment to social justice and fostering hope for future generations.
