Father George Joseph Dumais, SJ, passed away on March 4, 2024, at Sacred Heart Jesuit Center in Los Gatos, California. He was 88 years old. Fr. Dumais, who was a member of the Society of Jesus for 65 years, leaves behind a legacy of compassion and service to the community.
Fr. Dumais' life was characterized by his dedication to helping others, particularly the developmentally challenged individuals he cared for in Missoula, Montana. As the founder and director of a group home for 41 years, he created a nurturing environment where residents could build self-esteem and learn essential life skills. Reflecting on his work, Fr. Dumais referred to the individuals he served as the "Gentlemen," emphasizing the importance of providing love, respect, and a sense of family.
In addition to his work with the group home, Fr. Dumais was known for his culinary skills and artistic talent. His gourmet dinners became sought-after auction items at school fundraisers, and his artwork reflected his commitment to serving the underprivileged and embracing Jesuit spirituality.
Upon leaving Missoula in 2015, where his departure was deeply felt by the community, Fr. Dumais continued his pastoral ministry at Gonzaga University before relocating to the province health care center in Los Gatos in 2018. Despite his age, he remained active, spending hours in the art studio and diligently tracking his daily physical activity.
Fr. Dumais' impact extended beyond his professional endeavors as he touched the lives of many, including his surviving family members - his brother Ernest Dumais, sister Juliette Slobodzian, and numerous nieces and nephews. As the community mourns his passing, a Mass of Christian Burial is scheduled for Wednesday, April 3, 2024, at St. Anthony Parish in Missoula, Montana.
