Two Creighton University professors, Dr. J.J. Carney and Dr. Max Engel, have delved into the relationship between Catholic theology and sports through years of research, which they share in both a popular college class and a recently published book. Their work aims to help students understand the connections between sports and spirituality, offering insights from a Catholic perspective.

According to Carney, many students do not initially see the link between sports and spirituality, prompting the professors to guide them in recognizing how faith and sports intersect within their own experiences. Engel emphasized the importance of recognizing the deeper meanings in sports, stating, “A lot of the suffering and loss in sports is an opportunity to encounter Jesus through the paschal mystery.”

Carney and Engel encourage students to discern the overlap between sports and faith, distinguishing between rituals and practices that foster a deeper relationship with God. They challenge students to reflect on their motivations and how their faith influences their actions, rather than passing judgment on others.

In discussions with students, Carney and Engel address the common comparison of sports programs to religion, with Carney highlighting that while sports hold significance, they do not provide the same comprehensive worldview and values as religion. Engel warns against idolizing athletes, as it can lead to detrimental effects on their self-worth and development, especially in young athletes.

The professors find fulfillment in witnessing students grasp the connection between sports and Catholic faith, noting the impact on their perspectives and personal growth. Carney values the recognition of suffering in sports as a pathway to understanding redemption, stating, “God doesn’t save us from suffering...redemption comes through that.”

The Catholic Church has long shown interest in sports, with Pope John Paul II and Pope Francis both acknowledging the positive role of sports in society. This summer, Creighton University will host the Sport at the Service of Humanity Conference, aligning with the Vatican's initiative to explore the fusion of sports and faith to promote a better world.

Engel and Carney have successfully prompted students to delve deeper into the connections between Catholic theology and sports, fostering profound insights into their own life experiences. As Engel puts it, “Sports are an easy entrée to then… bring into the conversation theology and their experience with sports.”
