Dennis Kellogg from the Southern Nebraska Register recently sat down with Fr. Eric Immel, a vocation promoter from the Midwest Province of the Society of Jesus, to delve into the life and significance of St. Jean de Brébeuf, one of the North American Martyrs.

Fr. Immel shared insights into the remarkable journey and work of St. Jean de Brébeuf, highlighting his mission to evangelize the Huron people in Canada. He emphasized Brébeuf's dedication to enculturation and assimilation, noting his linguistic accomplishments and the impact of his ministry on the community.

Regarding the veneration of relics, Fr. Immel explained the theological significance behind it, stating, "To be in the presence of a piece of their earthly body, is to be in the presence of someone who now we believe is assured of fullness of life forever with God." He described the experience as magical and mystical, underscoring its importance in connecting with the faith and stories of the saints.

Fr. Immel also shared touching stories of individuals impacted by the relic of St. Jean de Brébeuf, including mothers bringing their children for prayers and people seeking healing and intercession through the saint. He recounted instances of miraculous healings and the profound spiritual connections people have felt during the relic tour.

Drawing parallels between St. Brébeuf's brutal death and the Eucharistic sacrifice, Fr. Immel highlighted the transformative power of martyrdom and the Eucharist in shaping believers' identities and actions. He eloquently expressed the connection between Brébeuf's martyrdom and the foundational beliefs of the Eucharist, emphasizing the beauty and grace inherent in both.

In discussing the vow of martyrdom taken by St. Brébeuf, Fr. Immel reflected on the contemporary relevance of such commitment, stating, "We may not be called to red martyrdom, to a brutal death like Jean de Brébeuf. But we're all called to do something great and we're all called to be people of fortitude." He emphasized the universal call to align one's life with the will of God and to embody courage and faith in everyday challenges.

Through this insightful and thought-provoking conversation, Fr. Immel provided a deeper understanding of the life and legacy of St. Jean de Brébeuf, inviting readers to reflect on their own spiritual journeys and the enduring impact of saints in the Catholic tradition.
