Hospitality Management Student Katera Dobson shared her unique background and journey towards pursuing a career in the hospitality industry. Dobson, who hails from New York City, expressed gratitude for growing up in a diverse environment that allowed her to embrace both her Finnish and African American heritage.

Reflecting on her upbringing, Dobson shared, "Luckily, growing up in Queens, NY, I never felt pressured into 'picking a side' regarding my culture." She highlighted how her Finnish mother instilled traditions and customs into their family, including making traditional Finnish food and visiting Finland regularly to stay connected with her mom's side of the family.

Dobson's interest in hospitality was deeply influenced by her mother, who works as a restaurant captain at the Harvard Club of New York City. Recalling fond memories of assisting her mother at work, Dobson shared, "I think this was when I realized I wanted to follow in her footsteps."

Choosing to major in Hospitality Management at St. John's University, Dobson expressed satisfaction with her coursework and practical experiences in the industry. Currently working as a food and beverage attendant, she values the learning opportunities and competitive edge it provides for her future career prospects.

Looking ahead, Dobson aspires to work in the theme park industry, particularly at Disney or Universal Studios. Inspired by her brother's positive experience in the Disney College Program, Dobson aims to apply for the program herself in the Spring 2025 semester, with a focus on operations.

In addition to her career goals, Dobson has also embarked on learning American Sign Language to enhance her communication skills and better serve diverse populations. She expressed pride in her progress and shared her intention to apply for an ASL pin at Disney World to assist guests who communicate through sign language.

As she continues her journey in hospitality management, Dobson remains optimistic and enthusiastic about the opportunities and experiences that lie ahead.
