In a recent interview, Sharod L. Tomlinson ’21 Ed.D., Assistant Vice President for Equity and Inclusion/Student Belonging, shared his journey and the sources of strength that have guided him throughout his career. One of his favorite scriptures, Philippians 4:13, has served as a constant reminder that nothing is impossible with the strength he derives from his faith in Christ.

Tomlinson's career trajectory has been marked by significant achievements and contributions to the field of education. He first joined the R.I.S.E. Network as the Director in 2016, and in 2019, he was named the Associate Dean for Student Success and Engagement. Tomlinson's leadership extended beyond R.I.S.E. as he also oversaw the Veterans Success Center and played a crucial role in developing social and academic programming that led to impressive retention and graduation rates.

A firm believer in the power of mentorship, Tomlinson recognizes its invaluable role in supporting students' personal and professional success. He says, "Mentoring plays an essential role in nurturing students’ success personally and professionally by providing information, guidance, and encouragement."

In January 2024, Tomlinson was honored to be appointed as the Assistant Vice President for Equity and Inclusion/Student Belonging. In this new position, he continues to serve the R.I.S.E. Network and lead the Office of Multicultural Affairs. Tomlinson expresses his gratitude for the administrators and faculty at the University who have played a significant part in his journey.

Tomlinson emphasizes the importance of diversity, equity, and inclusion in institutions. He believes that diversity brings new perspectives, equity creates opportunities for individuals in need, and inclusion fosters a sense of belonging and understanding among students and university stakeholders.

Throughout his academic journey, Tomlinson received essential support and guidance from his colleagues within The School of Education. He acknowledges the contributions of Ceceilia Parnther, Ph.D., Assistant Professor and Program Coordinator in the Department of Administrative and Instructional Leadership, and Aliya E. Holmes, Ph.D., Associate Professor for Educational Technology in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction. Their mentorship played a crucial role in the successful defense of his dissertation.

Tomlinson also attributes his strength and resilience to his son Isaiah, his family, friends, and mentors. He draws inspiration from the words of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., who said, "Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly."

Sharod L. Tomlinson's journey is a testament to the power of faith, mentorship, and a strong support system. As he continues to lead in his new role, he remains committed to promoting equity, inclusion, and student belonging within the University community.
