Rev. James D. Conley, D.D., S.T.L. | Diocese of Lincoln website
Bishop Emeritus Fabian Bruskewitz of the Catholic Diocese of Lincoln was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award for his unwavering commitment to the pro-life cause. The award was presented by Nebraskans Embracing Life during its 50th annual Celebration of Life event in Omaha.
Bishop Bruskewitz, in his keynote address, shared powerful stories of individuals who had directly experienced the devastating effects of abortion. He recounted encounters with nurses in a London hospital and a secret society in the Netherlands, both dedicated to protecting life at all stages. Additionally, he discussed a scandal in Milwaukee involving the improper disposal of aborted babies' bodies.
During his remarks, Bishop Bruskewitz highlighted the importance of fighting for God and defending life. He quoted a priest friend who would ask, "Where are your scars?" on the Day of Judgment. Bishop Bruskewitz emphasized the need to fight for what is right, stating, "Let us fight for life and in that give God His glory, for He will reign forever and ever."
Bishop James Conley, Bishop Bruskewitz's successor in the Diocese of Lincoln, delivered a recorded tribute praising his predecessor's pro-life achievements. Bishop Conley mentioned Bishop Bruskewitz's receipt of the Cardinal von Galen Award from Human Life International in 2013, which recognizes individuals who tirelessly defend human rights and life. Bishop Conley commended Bishop Bruskewitz for consistently demanding justice for the unborn and for his unwavering commitment to the truth.
Referring to Cardinal von Galen as the "Lion of Munster" for his advocacy against Germany's culture of death, Bishop Conley bestowed the title of the "Lion of Lincoln" upon Bishop Bruskewitz. He expressed his admiration for Bishop Bruskewitz's dedication to the pro-life cause and prayed that he might be a similar witness to the dignity of human life.
The Celebration of Life event also featured a Rally for Life, where representatives from pro-life and pro-family organizations provided updates on their work. During the event, speakers urged Nebraskans to oppose a petition drive seeking to add a right to abortion to the state constitution.
In addition to Bishop Bruskewitz's award, Nebraskans Embracing Life presented several other awards. Elijah Fick received the Anne Marie Bowen Memorial Scholarship Award, Megan Mastro received the Gabriel Award, Lois Coyne received the Bob and Rita Gradoville Award, and Terri Cunningham-Swanson received the Peter Bataillon Award.
Looking ahead, Nebraskans Embracing Life is encouraging individuals to participate in the 54-Day Novena for Life, starting on Ash Wednesday and concluding on Divine Mercy Sunday. The novena aims to pray for the conversion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the protection of life in Nebraska.
