Iona University is excited to announce the opening of its new campus in Westport, Ireland. The university is now accepting applications for the inaugural academic session, which will offer courses in nursing and philosophy from May 11-24, 2024. President Seamus Carey expressed his enthusiasm for the new campus, stating, "We are so pleased to be launching our new campus in Westport and cannot wait for students to experience all this region of Ireland has to offer."
Iona University has a long-standing commitment to global study, and the Study Abroad program allows students to immerse themselves in different cultures around the world. The new campus in Westport will provide a unique opportunity for students to explore the local culture and make a positive impact in the community while earning graduation credits.
The nursing program at Iona University aims to prepare students for the challenges of the profession by examining nursing practice, moral and legal issues, and healthcare trends. Director of Nursing and Associate Dean of the NewYork-Presbyterian Iona School of Health Sciences, Sherylyn Watson, explains, "Studying in Ireland will offer Iona nursing students an opportunity to learn about the nursing profession through a global lens by broadening their horizons and deepening their sense of compassion."
The philosophy course offered at the new campus will explore the role of music in human experience and its moral influence. Students will engage with local performers to gain a deeper understanding of the subject. The immersive programs at Iona's Westport campus will provide students with experiential learning opportunities, such as clinical observations in local hospitals for nursing students and interactions with local musicians for philosophy students. These experiences will not only enhance their understanding of the world but also develop real-world skills.
Iona University's roots can be traced back to nineteenth-century Ireland, where Edmund Rice, the founder of the Congregation of Christian Brothers, dedicated his wealth to educating the country's marginalized children. The university was established in 1940 in New Rochelle, N.Y., with a mission to provide a high-quality education. The new campus in Westport is a testament to Iona's commitment to its Irish legacy and its mission of transformative education.
The Westport House Estate, where the campus is located, offers stunning views and a commitment to building a sustainable future. The town of Westport itself has been voted the best place to live in Ireland and provides students with a vibrant cultural environment.
