Pope Francis took to social media to announce his excitement for his upcoming visit to Budapest, the capital of Hungary, this week.
“Dear Hungarian brothers and sisters, I know you are making great efforts to prepare for my arrival: I thank you from my heart,” the pontiff said in an April 23 Twitter post. “And I ask you all to accompany me with your prayers.”
From April 28-30, Francis will embark on his 41st foreign trip since his appointment as pope in 2013 by visiting Budapest, a recent Detroit Catholic report said. He will meet with refugees, government officials, academic scholars and young people during his trip. The two most significant matters on the pope's agenda are expected to be the conflict in Ukraine and immigration.
Pope Francis will commence his three-day visit to the predominantly Christian nation under the motto "Christ is our future," a Vatican News release said. It visit will be the pope's second Apostolic Journey of 2023, following his trip to the African countries of South Sudan and the Democratic Republic of Congo earlier in the year.
The pope will meet with Hungarian president Katalin Novák, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, local bishops and members of the Catholic community; a U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops report said. He will spend one full day in the country on April 29 and engage in several activities, including a private meeting with children, addressing refugees and individuals in need, and meeting with young people and the local Jesuit community. He will also celebrate Mass in front of Hungary's Parliament building and meet with scholars from Pázmány Péter Catholic University in Budapest before departing for Rome in the afternoon of April 30.
In 2021, Pope Francis made a brief visit to Budapest in order to attend the closing Mass of the 52nd International Eucharistic Congress.
