The latest school shooting has elicited calls from Catholic bishops to help people learn to resolve their problems in a more peaceful fashion.
The pleas came after Audrey Elizabeth Hale, a 28-year-old former student of the Covenant School, shot and killed six people, including three children, at a Nashville elementary school on Monday. She had detailed maps of the facility, considered another target and left behind a manifesto that might provide insight into her motive.
“Very distressed and sorry to hear of the terrible school shooting in Nashville, Providence Bishop Thomas Tobin said in a Twitter posting. “May God grant eternal peace to those who have died, and gentle consolation to all who mourn their loss. And may our Nation find a way to end this plague of violence.”
Hale broke into the school by shooting a door and proceeded to kill three young students and three staff members before being confronted and killed by police. The police provided these details at an afternoon news conference, and USA Today was among the media outlets publishing the information.
The police received a 911 call at 10:13 am and five officers quickly responded. They found the assailant on the second floor of the school. Chief John Drake of the Metro Nashville Police Department told the media the intruder who carried out the Nashville elementary school shooting had two AR-style weapons, one being a rifle and the other a pistol, along with a handgun. Two of these weapons were legally purchased in the Nashville area, although it is not clear which ones, USA Today reported.
"We have to do more to stop gun violence. It's ripping our communities apart," President Joe Biden said afterward, as reported by CBS News. "I call on Congress again to pass my assault weapons ban.”
The Covenant School is a private school that was established in 2001 and provides education to pre-kindergarten through sixth-grade students. The school is located on the premises of Covenant Presbyterian Church in the Green Hills neighborhood of Nashville, which is about 9 miles from the city's downtown area, USA Today reported.
