Catholic News Agency reported on President Joe Biden's tweet and speech about his to sign a law that would codify Roe if his party keeps control of Congress in the November election, saying that the strategy could backfire for Biden as it leaves Catholics feeling politically discounted.
“The final say about your right to choose rests with you,” Biden said on Twitter Wednesday. “If you do your part and vote, Democratic leaders in Congress will do their part. I’ll do my part. With your support, I will sign a law codifying Roe in January.”
Biden gave a speech later that day, on his tweet.
The Democratic National Committee speech at the Howard Theatre was all about abortion, Catholic News Agency (CNA) reported, saying it's a political ploy as Democratic candidates are facing “uphill battles” in the polls.
Biden called the November vote “the most consequential election in history” when it comes to abortion rights, CNA continued.
Democrats currently hold the House and the Senate by very slim margins. Next month, all 435 House seats and 35 Senate seats are up for election. CNA told readers that 36 governorships are also on the ballot.
Biden has called Republicans “extremists,” and he had predicted a national abortion ban if Republicans take Congress. With Biden’s approval rating and popularity at an all-time low, CNA asserts that Biden is pushing voters to think the issue of abortion is the only determinant in the vote.
Biden said banning abortion means more for women.
“Today in America, there are women who have been turned away from emergency rooms while having miscarriages, losing wanted pregnancies, and told they need to wait until they are sicker before they get the care they need. Doctors and nurses fear they can face criminal charges,” Biden said, CNA reported.
That view was contested by Live-Action, a pro-life advocacy group. It reported on its website that abortion laws within the states, specifically since Roe was overturned, all explicitly allow for treatment for miscarriages and ectopic pregnancies. Live-Action claims pro-choice advocates are attempting to “scare women” into believing the lie about obstetric care for women. Live-Action listed all 50 states’ abortion laws where this is clearly stated.
Catholic advocates feel let down by Biden putting politics over his religious beliefs.
“Catholics are appalled by the unprecedented abortion extremism pursued by the nation’s second Catholic president,” CatholicVote President Brian Burch said in a press release. “While Americans struggle with record inflation, the president of the United States has nothing to offer but a pledge to expand the right to violently destroy innocent unborn children – up until birth and for any reason.”
He urged U.S. bishops to address these issues. “We need Church leaders to step up and make clear that no Catholic can support candidates or policies that would make America one of the most extreme abortion nations in the world,” he said.
The Church cites the Catechism as providing guidance on the topic: “Since the first century the Church has affirmed the moral evil of every procured abortion. This teaching has not changed and remains unchangeable. Direct abortion, that is to say, abortion willed as an ends or a means, is gravely contrary to the moral law” (No. 2271).
