Carol Tobias, president of National Right to Life Committee (NRLC), an organization that supports the right to life from conception until natural death, cheered the Supreme Court for its ruling on Roe v Wade.
“This is a great day for preborn children and their mothers,” Tobias said in an online statement. “The Court has correctly decided that a right to abortion is not in the constitution, thereby allowing the people, through their elected representatives, to have a voice in this very important decision.”
The Supreme Court ruled to overturn Roe v Wade, returning power to the states to determine the legality of abortion, announcing its 6-3 ruling Friday.
“The Constitution makes no reference to abortion, and no such right is implicitly protected by any constitutional provision, including the one on which the defenders of Roe and Casey now chiefly rely — the Due Process Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment,” Justice Samuel Alito wrote in his legal opinion, CNBC reported. "It is time to heed the Constitution and return the issue of abortion to the people’s elected representatives."
Abortion is now banned or restricted in less than half of the states and remains legal in the rest, NPR reported on where the matter stands by state now. Thirteen states had "trigger laws," designed to take effect if Roe v Wade were overturned. In some states, such as Missouri and South Dakota, the trigger laws have already been enacted.
Organizations that provide free support and resources for pregnant women, such as Catholic Charities, are being urged to continue those services, which some predict will me in more demand. Catholic Charities offers counseling and guidance for mothers, helping them come up with plans for parenting or for adoption. The organization helps the mothers not only through birth, but offers support for the rest of their lives.
More than 63,000,000 abortions were performed while Roe v Wade was in effect, according to records from the Guttmacher Institute.
