The Archdiocese of Los Angeles celebrated on Monday the feast day of Mary, mother of God.
The archdiocese posted a video of the service on Facebook.
"Today we celebrate the ancient devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary as Mother of the Church," the archdiocese said in the Facebook post. "Pope Francis instituted the day into the Roman Calendar to be celebrated after Pentecost. Let us open our hearts to the scriptures today, remembering her role in salvation history."
Mary stands alone in her position among Catholics. As a person, she is considered to be among those in need of God's saving, but as the mother of God, she has received a high level of God's grace, the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops said on its site. Mary willingly participated in God's plan, giving her an important part in God's salvation. Catholics deem Mary a role model of being a disciple and often ask for her intercession in their prayers.
Many days are set aside to honor Mary every year, the Marians of the Immaculate Conception reported. Celebrations include: the Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God, which is celebrated on Jan. 1; the Annunciation on March 25; Our Lady of Fatima on May 13; the Visitation on May 31; the Assumption on Aug. 15; and the Immaculate Conception on Dec. 8.
Pentecost recalls the day the Holy Spirit filled Jesus' disciples, enabling them to preach the Gospel, Christianity.com reported. It is celebrated approximately 10 days after Jesus ascended into heaven. Jesus' followers were gathered inside, when suddenly they heard what sounded like a gust of wind had rushed into the room. Flames appeared overhead, and the Holy Spirit filled them, allowing them to speak in tongues. A crowd made up of people who spoke various languages gathered around them, and everyone in the crowd heard the followers speaking in their native languages. Peter began to preach to the crowd about Jesus, converting 3,000 people that day.
