Pope John Francis is speaking out about issues involving the pandemic, migration and countries in the midst of turmoil.

In a Jan. 10 address to the Diplomatic Corps, Pope Francis encouraged vaccination, stating that it is a moral obligation to care for one’s health and respect the health of others. He also called for coordinated efforts at the local, national, regional and global levels to ensure that countries in need are provided with resources to combat the pandemic.

He also offered prayers for the people of Lebanon, who are enduring an economic and political crisis, recalling his 2021 visits to Iraq, Budapest, Cyprus and Greece when he was first moved by the migrant population.

Pope Francis offered thanks to the governments and residents who welcome and protect migrants while denouncing their dehumanization. He also mentioned the immigration crisis at the U.S.-Mexico border and its fragmented solutions.

“The issue of migration, together with the pandemic and climate change, has clearly demonstrated that we cannot be saved alone and by ourselves: the great challenges of our time are all global,” Pope Francis later said on his Twitter account.

Pope Francis visited a migrant camp on the Greek Island of Lesbos in December, his first visit since 2016. The Lesbos migrant camp is currently home to almost 2,200 refugees. The pope suggested countries need to find the root causes that drive people to flee their homelands and not use refugees for “political propaganda.”

Pope Francis has also criticized the United States’ southern border immigration practices in the past. He opposed the border wall in 2019, and also encouraged then-President Donald Trump not to reinstate the policy of separating children from parents.

The Catholic Church has emphasized that it recognizes the right of sovereign nations to protect their borders. But decent humanity requires that countries recognize the dignity of every person and their right to seek safety and employment.
