St. Elizabeth University (SEU) shared a profile of one individual who is going the extra mile to support those who are marginalized in the community.

Katharine Rosario is an immigrant from the Dominican Republic to the United States and upon her arrival she was struck by the reality that there is a great deal of injustice and inequality in the City of Paterson, which has been ranked as one of the most dangerous areas in the state of New Jersey.

"Witnessing the violence that would happen in my community and how it impacted my home inspired me to study social work," Rosario said. "I developed a strong sense of justice and a need to protect those who couldn't protect themselves."

Rosario was encouraged in her social justice endeavors even more at SEU, where she collaborated with the University’s Social Work department. In particular, Rosario took part in the Project Homeless Connect collaboration with more than 40 service providers.

Rosario’s bilingual skills in English and Spanish allowed her to help a wider range of people than a one-language speaker would be able to. She was able to help both during the project and afterward by conducting exit interviews with clients who were in a vulnerable housing situation.

During her time at the school, Rosario helped to form SOMOS! United, a club to inform individuals about the culture and traditions of Latino nations.

Rosario’s advisor played a big role in her time at the school she said, as she was given the guidance needed to plug into the perfect educational outlet with the right social projects.

"The social work department at Saint Elizabeth University has provided me with the skills necessary to ensure that I give 100% to all my future clients while always respecting the dignity of the person," Rosario said.

Rosario hopes to work in the Department of Child Protection and Permanency upon graduation.
