The COVID-19 pandemic has brought an unexpected end to the Knights of Columbus’ fiscal year.

Councils worldwide have had to adjust to the so-called new normal, from indefinitely closing halls to conducting meetings via videoconference. In any given year, the Knights can be found helping those who seek it, but with social distancing a part of everyday life for the foreseeable future, councils are left to wonder how they can still be there for neighbors.

The K of C headquarters in New Haven, Connecticut has told the councils not to fret because there are plenty of things to do, even during a serious public health emergency. Several councils have livestreamed events, held drive-through distributions and prayer services, and hosted blood drives.

“Hosting any of these events requires a bit of creativity as you have to make sure you meet local, civil and/or diocesan guidelines within your jurisdiction,” the organization said in a press release on its website. “If you have any questions, please reach out to your jurisdictional program director.”

The Knights of Columbus livestreamed a Virtual Silver Rose Prayer Service on July 29, touting it as a great way for councils to join people spiritually while prioritizing the health and safety of others. The rose used in that event was blessed by Pope Francis in commemoration of the 60th anniversary of the program.

With many states reopening, some councils may begin having in-person activities again. It is important that attendees and participants wear face coverings and give each other six feet of space, as well as adhere to the rules and regulations of their respective jurisdictions.

Councils will still receive credit toward the Columbian Award for a remote activity. They must submit documentation to the Knights' Supreme Council headquarters.
