The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) are calling recent acts of vandalism at Catholic sites around the nation "signs of a society in need of healing," according to a press release posted to the USCCB website.

Multiple reports have included disfigurement of statues of Jesus Christ and the Virgin Mary, a fire at a historic mission church and a parish that was both hit with a car and set on fire. Miami Archbishop Thomas Wenski, chairman of USCCB's Committee on Religious Liberty; and Oklahoma City Archbishop Paul Coakley, chairman of USCCB's Committee on Domestic Justice and Human Development; said they are praying for the perpetrators even though there seems to be no apparent motive, but will be on the lookout to prevent any future incidents.

"Following the example of Our Lord, we respond to confusion with understanding and to hatred with love," the chairmen were quoted in the release.
