The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) wants President Donald Trump to reverse his recent Presidential Memorandum regarding 2020 Census results, calling it "wrong and divisive," according to a press release posted on the USCCB website.
Trump ordered the U.S. Secretary of Commerce to exclude undocumented citizens who were counted in the 2020 Census from being counted when determining the number of U.S. Representatives for each state.
"Counting the undocumented in the census and then denying them and the states in which they reside their rightful representation in Congress is counter to the Constitution and a grave injustice," Archbishop Paul Coakley of Oklahoma City and Auxiliary Bishop Mario Dorsonville of Washington wrote in a joint statement, according to the release.
Coakley and Dorsonville said the policy would make people feel unvalued and that they are following Pope Francis' lead in pushing for the reversal of the memorandum. The Pope has said that there now exists an opportunity to "build inclusive societies based on respect for human dignity, tolerance, compassion and mercy."
