Mercy Health Services (MHS) recently announced that David N. Maine, M.D., is the organization's new president and CEO.

Maine took his new position at the health care company on July 1 after becoming part of the Board of Trustees in January. He has been executive VP of Mercy Health Services since October 2019, when he was responsible for all operations of the organization, as well as managing the Medical Center, primary- and specialty-care physician networks and affiliates.

Sister Helen Amos, RSM, executive chair of the MHS Board of Trustees, spoke highly of Maine’s experience and skill as a doctor.

“As a longtime Mercy physician leader, Dr. Maine is uniquely qualified to bolster and further expand Mercy’s award-winning clinical programs, enhancing Mercy’s singular position as an independent, Catholic health system with statewide reach,” Amos said in the announcement. “For more than a decade at Mercy, Dr. Maine has consistently demonstrated clinical and business excellence, compassion for our patients, and a deep personal commitment to our mission and values. He’s exactly the right leader at the right time for Mercy.”

“I am honored and humbled to be selected by the Board of Trustees to follow in [retiring President and CEO Thomas R. Mullen]’s footsteps as president & CEO of Mercy Health Services,” Maine said in the release. “As a result of Sister Helen’s and Tom’s leadership over the years, Mercy is blessed with outstanding physicians, providers, nurses, staff and a strong team of executive leaders all committed to moving Mercy forward for many years to come.”

Maine, who has been named Top Doctor by Baltimore magazine numerous times, is the son of a Jewish-Iraqi refugee family who arrived in New York in 1974. Maine attended the University of Rochester School of Medicine and graduated in 2002 with Alpha Omega Alpha honors. After graduation, he completed his residency at The Johns Hopkins Hospital in Anesthesiology.
