August marks National Make a Will Month, encouraging individuals to consider how they can manage their resources for the benefit of others, even after their lifetime. The observance serves as a prompt for Catholics and others to think about ways to support causes important to them through estate planning.

While creating a will is one approach, the Diocese of Wichita notes that there are several methods available for planned giving. These include naming charitable beneficiaries on retirement accounts or establishing trusts. Such options allow individuals to provide for loved ones while also supporting ministries, parishes, schools, and other church-related initiatives.

In the Diocese of Wichita, legacy gifts have had a significant effect on local communities. These planned contributions can be directed toward any of the diocese’s 90 parishes, its 38 Catholic schools, or various ministries focused on helping those in need, strengthening families, and preparing future priests. Because these gifts often come from assets rather than income, donors may be able to contribute more than they could during their lifetimes.

“Planned giving is an expression of extraordinary stewardship in its fullest sense,” said Connor Meier, assistant director of development and planned giving for the diocese. “It’s about recognizing that our blessings are meant to be shared, and that a legacy gift is one way to give thanks to God while witnessing to others.”

To acknowledge those who make such commitments, the diocese has established the Grateful Steward Legacy Society. Membership is open to individuals and families who have included a parish, school, ministry, or diocesan entity in their estate plans. The society serves as a gesture of appreciation and recognition for those choosing to leave a faith-based legacy.

The Diocese invites anyone who has already named a diocesan entity in their plans—or is considering doing so—to join the Grateful Steward Legacy Society. For those who have not yet begun estate planning discussions, National Make a Will Month offers an opportunity to start.

Further information about planned giving and membership in the Grateful Steward Legacy Society can be found at https://catholicdioceseofwichita.org/give/. Those interested may also contact Connor Meier at 316-440-1755 or by email.
