Austin Choate, a doctoral student at the University of Dallas, has been awarded a Sumners Scholarship. This scholarship is granted by the Sumners Foundation, which aims to promote the study and practice of American self-governance principles. It is specifically for students studying political philosophy.
Choate expressed his gratitude for receiving the scholarship, stating, “The Sumners Foundation PhD Scholarship will help me in many ways.” He mentioned that it would support his research on St. Robert Bellarmine and provide opportunities beneficial for his future career. His goal is to work at the intersection of academia and public policy, focusing on education and child welfare issues.
He added that participation in Sumners Foundation programs would allow him to connect with individuals committed to building a flourishing community. Additionally, he hopes to grow as a leader by mentoring younger scholars interested in similar fields.
Choate studies at the Institute of Philosophic Studies (IPS) at the University of Dallas. The IPS offers degrees in literature, philosophy, and politics and is noted for its unique core curriculum integrating these disciplines.
The Sumners Foundation awards scholarships based on civic engagement, academic excellence, leadership capacity, and dedication to democracy. Scott Higginbotham, Chairman of the Foundation Board, emphasized that being selected as a Sumners Scholar is an honor with lasting impact.
Sumners Scholars have historically contributed significantly to their communities and states. Notable alumni include U.S. District Judge Fred Biery and former Senior Deputy Attorney General Dara Derryberry.
