Kolbe Prison Ministries conducted a retreat at Winfield Correctional Facility from February 28th to March 2nd, marking the inaugural event of its kind in the Catholic Diocese of Wichita. The event saw 48 participants and two stewards welcomed by volunteers from Texas, Oklahoma, and Kansas City, in addition to local support. The retreat aimed to educate those unfamiliar with the Catholic faith and reinvigorate current Catholics to deepen their commitment.

The planning began in September 2024, under the guidance of Father Clay Kimbro and with the endorsement of Bishop Kemme. Rheinhold Olson from Dallas directed the retreat, leveraging his roots in Kansas. Participants were divided into groups to facilitate focused discussions, with tables seating six retreatants and three volunteers, allowing for personalized attention and interaction.

The retreat featured various activities, including table discussions and spiritual talks. Notably, participants enjoyed snacks like grapes, tangerines, and mixed nuts, offering them a rare moment of enjoyment within the facility environment. Day two of the retreat emphasized the mysteries of the faith through witness talks and Q&A sessions, with speakers including Fr. Kimbro, Fr. Jim Billinger, Deacon Dan Schletzbaum, and seminarian Koby Nguyen. Fr. Kimbro highlighted differences in biblical familiarity between Catholics and Protestants, explaining that Catholics may not always remember specific chapters and verses but have a deep understanding of the Bible's teachings.

The third day consolidated the retreat's teachings. Participants were encouraged to explore Catholicism further, with some expressing interest in joining the faith. During the retreat, logistical challenges arose, as space became an issue due to growing interest in Catholic meetings. Discussions with Warden Reames about the need for larger facilities were initiated following the retreat.

Volunteer Paula Hecker received a warm reception from participants, underscoring the emotional impact of consistent support from external volunteers. The retreat concluded with 19 participants signing up for further religious studies, signaling a successful engagement with the Catholic faith.

The retreat provided an opportunity for all attendees, regardless of their faith backgrounds, to experience the goodness of fellowship and spiritual discovery. As part of the follow-up, mass attendance increased in the facility, and the availability of religious materials expanded.

Individuals interested in supporting the ministry or participating in future retreats are encouraged to contact program coordinator Cindy Kellick. Donations and volunteering are critical components in sustaining the ministry's outreach efforts. Kellick highlighted the importance of supporting incarcerated individuals, sharing that "these men are among the least of our brethren," and emphasized the teachings of Christ regarding ministering to those in need.
