Dr. Tracey Herstich, a Clinical Associate Professor and Undergraduate Chair at Walsh University's Byers School of Nursing, led a medical mission to Guatemala this month. The team included Dr. Christina Gabele, also from Walsh University, and Tyler Shrout, an alum and pediatric nurse at Akron Children’s Hospital. They collaborated with CoffeeMed to provide healthcare in San Juan del Obispo and San Antonio Aguas Calientes.

The mission spanned four days during which the team treated around 240 patients for conditions such as hypertension, Type 2 diabetes, dengue fever, and skin issues. Despite initial challenges like delayed medical supplies, they adapted by purchasing necessary equipment locally and conducting home visits.

“They were deeply grateful for the care we provided,” said Herstich. She emphasized the dignity that access to basic medical care brings to underserved communities.

Herstich noted the impact of witnessing extreme poverty on her team members' perspectives: “Once you see communities and individuals living in extreme poverty, your life is never the same.”

Shrout found the trip meaningful as it connected his education with real-world applications. The experience highlighted the harsh realities faced by those living on less than $2 a day.

Dr. Gabele remarked on the gratitude expressed by patients: “It was incredible to see their smiles... Honestly, they change our worldview more than we change theirs.”

The mission underscored Walsh University's commitment to servant leadership in addressing injustices like inadequate access to healthcare. “While we may not solve these challenges in a week," Herstich stated, "we can bring dignity and respect to those we serve."
