Planned Parenthood released its annual report listing the number of abortions and other services provided in 2020, prompting Catholic leaders to repeat messages they made after this spring’s Supreme Court ruling on abortion.
“Our first thoughts are with the little ones whose lives have been taken since 1973,” Los Angeles Archbishop Jose Gomez said in a release in response to the Dobbs case ruling. “We mourn their loss, and we entrust their souls to God, who loved them from before all ages and who will love them for all eternity.”
Planned Parenthood performed 383,860 abortions in 2020. Under “abortion care,” Planned Parenthood says, “Abortion is essential health care that cannot wait for the end of a pandemic or the whims of politicians.”
Katie Yoder, who writes for Catholic News Agency, says Planned Parenthood accounted for 41% of abortions in the United States in 2020. She also pointed out that Planned Parenthood received $633.4 million in government funding for the 2020-21 fiscal year.
“Our hearts are also with every woman and man who has suffered grievously from abortion; we pray for their healing, and we pledge our continued compassion and support,” Gomez said in his release. “As a Church, we need to serve those who face difficult pregnancies and surround them with love.”
Pro-life activists jumped on the release of the report as a chance to condemn Planned Parenthood and its government funding. Students for Life America and Live Action founder Lila Rose tweeted, “Shut them down now!”
The Catholic Church has opposed abortion for centuries, regardless of evolving biological theories about when exactly life begins, the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) says. The Catechism specifies that: ”Since the first century the Church has affirmed the moral evil of every procured abortion. This teaching has not changed and remains unchangeable. Direct abortion, that is to say, abortion willed either as an end or a means, is gravely contrary to the moral law" (No. 2271).
A Gallup Poll that was conducted in May 2021 found that the majority of Americans do not support unrestricted access to abortion. Almost half (48%) of the respondents said they believe abortion should be allowed only under certain circumstances, while 19% said they believe abortion should be illegal in all cases, and 32% said they believe abortion should be legal in all cases.
