The Iowa Knights of Columbus made a conscious effort to help those in need after a severe windstorm, a release issued on the Knights' website said.

The Cedar Rapids area recently faced hurricane-level conditions that left a trail of destruction.

After Iowa State Deputy Paul Lee made a delivery to St. Ludmila Catholic Church, he saw a family was standing in front of a tree that had fallen on their home and left a great amount of damage to the top floor.

The storm damaged other homes as well as decimating over 10 million acres of corn.

St. Ludmila’s and other churches have stepped up, along with the Knights of Columbus.

The Knights have continued to do the work needed, understanding that we have a personal responsibility to care for those in need.

“That is just the testament of Knights that even when we’re impacted personally, there’s still that notion of giving in service to others,” Lee said in the release. “I know my fellow brother Knights are out there putting their faith in action, doing the work they pledged to do when we became members and brothers of this Order.”

It is no secret that the Knights are often eager to help with the aftermath of destruction and disaster. The Supreme Council donated over $1.3 million to disaster relief in 2019 along with helping to facilitate donations of $3.5 million from local councils and assemblies.

Going above and beyond to meet the specific needs of the communities harmed by the storms, the Knights even went out of their way to aid those of different religious backgrounds.

"Knights from Pope John XXIII Council 5677 in Cedar Rapids made sure to cook foods that meet the dietary needs for the Muslim and Jewish communities,” the release said

In addition to the physical help, the Knights also held candles to help give light to the Mass at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids following a power outage.

“When you look at the work that we do, it speaks even more volumes of who we are as men of faith,” Lee said
