On January 19, Walsh University held its annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service, bringing together over 300 students, scholar-athletes, faculty, and staff. The event aimed to honor Dr. King’s legacy through community service and reflection.

The day began with a gathering at the Cecchini Center on campus. Walsh University President Tim Collins delivered remarks, followed by a keynote address from Jaden Baxter ’23. Baxter is a former Cavalier football captain and scholar-athlete who now serves as Special Assistant to the Mayor of Cleveland for Community Engagement.

After the opening program, participants volunteered with organizations throughout Stark County. Their activities included supporting children, seniors, families, and various community programs. Organizers said these efforts were in line with Dr. King’s view that leadership should be demonstrated through service and that faith requires action toward justice.

Groups such as Blouin Scholars, Honors students, and members of Walsh University Athletics took part in the initiative. According to university representatives, their involvement illustrated the institution’s mission to combine scholarship with reflection and service.

Walsh University will continue recognizing Dr. King’s contributions during its Dignity in Action: The Year of Faith initiative this week by offering more programs and service opportunities for students and other members of the campus community.
