Superintendent Janet Eaton reflects on four decades in Wichita Catholic education

This year marks 40 years in Catholic education for Janet Eaton, Superintendent of Catholic Schools for the Diocese of Wichita. Reflecting on her career, Eaton shared memories from her time as a teacher and principal at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, as well as leadership roles in the Archdiocese of St. Louis.
“Although the years have passed quickly, my heart still lies within the four walls of a classroom as a teacher. It is there that formation really happens. It is there that my life was so blessed by great student relationships and great team efforts built with parents,” Eaton wrote.
The Diocese of Wichita currently employs 788 teachers, administrators, and other professional staff across 38 schools, with another 592 serving in various staff roles either full or part time. Eaton highlighted several educators for their dedication:
• Patty Yoakam, who has taught at Parson’s St. Patrick Catholic School for 40 years and commutes more than 40 miles daily;
• Greg Goertz, middle school religion teacher at Wichita’s St. Francis of Assisi Catholic School who volunteers each summer at Christ the Teacher Retreat;
• Lori Luman, middle school math teacher at Wichita’s St. Thomas Catholic School;
• Elaine Howey, fourth grade teacher at Wichita’s St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic School;
• Sr. Mary Therese, IHM, first grade teacher at Ost’s St. Joseph Catholic School;
• Jesus Medina, third-fourth combination teacher at Coffeyville’s Holy Name Catholic School;
• Sean McKinney, interim principal at Wichita’s All Saints Catholic School;
• Chris Jaax, social studies teacher and coach at Wichita’s Bishop Carroll Catholic High School; and
• Gabi Palmer, first-year fourth grade teacher at Hutchinson’s Holy Cross Catholic School.
“It is on the shoulders of these and so many more great educators that we celebrate and praise God for their gifts. If you know a diocesan school teacher, please reach out to share your appreciation,” Eaton said.
The Diocese of Wichita oversees religious activities and ministries throughout south-central and southeast Kansas according to its official website. The diocese operates 90 parishes and missions along with its network of schools as detailed online. In addition to education initiatives like those described by Eaton, the diocese supports charitable work through Catholic Charities and other programs focused on family life, youth engagement and social justice.
Founded in 1887 the diocese continues to promote faith formation through worship and service.
