Holy Redeemer Chinese Catholic Elementary marks four decades of Lunar New Year celebrations

Students at Holy Redeemer Chinese Catholic Elementary School in Philadelphia will mark the 40th annual Chinese New Year celebration with two performances. The events, which feature music and dance, are scheduled for Friday, March 6, 2026, and Monday, March 9, 2026, both from noon to 2 p.m. at the school’s location on Vine Street in Chinatown.
The celebration highlights the students’ cultural heritage and community traditions. According to the press release: “The programs will honor the students’ culture, traditions, and community through music and dance.”
Chinese New Year follows the Lunar calendar and begins on a different date each year. In 2026, it started on Tuesday, February 17. Traditionally observed for one month, each new year is associated with an animal from the Chinese zodiac; this year is dedicated to the Horse.
Holy Redeemer Chinese Catholic School was established in 1941 by Cardinal Dennis Dougherty as part of a mission to serve Philadelphia’s Chinese community. The school offers education from kindergarten through eighth grade with a focus on academic rigor grounded in Catholic faith principles. It has been recognized as a School of Distinguished Instruction by the Archdiocese of Philadelphia’s Office of Catholic Education for five consecutive years.
The Archdiocese of Philadelphia oversees Catholic education and outreach across its region. It serves more than 1.3 million Catholics and supports communities through agencies such as Nutritional Development Services and Catholic Social Services (official website). The archdiocese also manages major worship sites like the Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul (official website), functions as a metropolitan see within Pennsylvania (official website), and promotes charitable efforts alongside religious instruction (official website). Nelson Pérez has served as its tenth archbishop since his installation in 2020 (official website).
