Faculty member reflects on study abroad experiences and impact on teaching at St. John’s University

A faculty member at St. John’s University shared on Mar. 18 personal reflections about the influence of study abroad experiences on both professional and personal growth, highlighting how international education has shaped a career in teaching and scholarship.
The topic is relevant as universities increasingly emphasize global perspectives and cultural understanding among students. The faculty member described an initial lack of interest in international travel during high school, but later developed a passion for Italian language and culture while studying at the University of California, Los Angeles. This led to a semester abroad in Siena, Italy, which was described as life changing.
The experience of living in a foreign country provided new confidence and independence, including navigating unfamiliar cities such as Paris without knowing the local language or public transportation systems. Exposure to different cultures broadened worldviews and encouraged thinking beyond familiar environments. These experiences contributed to pursuing a career as a historian focused on modern Italy and fostered opportunities for further research and travel across Europe.
As part of current teaching responsibilities, the faculty member leads students in the Global Passport Program during a week-long academic trip to Rome. Students are encouraged to observe their surroundings closely and reflect on differences between cultures, such as comparing gelato in Italy with ice cream in the United States or considering the depth of history present in Rome compared to American cities.
St. John’s University supports multicultural initiatives through its centers and institutes focused on both local and global efforts, according to the official website. The university features campuses in Queens and Manhattan, New York, along with international sites in Rome, Paris, and Limerick according to its official website. St. John’s is affiliated with the Vincentian Community according to its official website and operates as a Catholic institution dedicated to liberal arts education according to its official website. It offers more than 100 undergraduate majors across six schools and colleges according to its official website.
Rev. Brian J. Shanley, O.P., held the presidency of St. John’s University per the official website.
