Cardinal Joseph W. Tobin shares Easter message addressing hope and peace

Cardinal Joseph W. Tobin, Archbishop of Newark, delivered an Easter message on Apr. 4 focusing on hope, compassion, and the presence of Christ in times of uncertainty.
The message comes as communities face ongoing challenges such as conflict, displacement, and a longing for security. The Cardinal said these difficulties make the promise of Easter especially relevant this year.
“In the first light of that Easter morning, the women came to the tomb with sorrow and questions… What began in sadness was transformed into awe and finally into a deep and serene joy. The Lord has risen as he said!” Tobin said. He emphasized that “Easter does not turn away from these realities; it faces them directly.” He added that “the resurrection of Jesus assures us that God is present even amid suffering and confusion,” encouraging people to embrace compassion, mercy, and hope.
Tobin also spoke about efforts within the Archdiocese: “In the Archdiocese of Newark, we respond to this call to hope by proclaiming that We Are His Witnesses… It invites us to listen more attentively…and become communities where each person knows they are seen, welcomed and loved.” The Cardinal offered blessings for all celebrating Easter: “May his love strengthen you, fill your homes with hope and bring comfort to every heart. Blessings and peace for you and your loved ones this Easter.”
The Archdiocese of Newark has engaged in social outreach initiatives across northern New Jersey through community events according to its official website. Its pastoral care includes serving as witnesses of Christ through ministries throughout Bergen, Essex, Hudson, and Union counties according to its official website. The Archdiocese also partners in global Church activities such as the Synod on Synodality and World Mission Sunday collections according to its official website.
As Cardinal Tobin continues his leadership role according to its official website, parish support services like faith formation remain central priorities for local communities according to its official website.
