Archbishop Nelson J. Pérez of Philadelphia announced on Mar. 9 that Pope Leo XIV has appointed Archbishop Gabriele Giordano Caccia as the new Apostolic Nuncio to the United States, following the retirement of Cardinal Christophe Pierre at age 80.

The appointment marks a significant transition in the diplomatic representation of the Holy See in the United States, which is important for both national and local Catholic communities. The Apostolic Nuncio serves as the Pope’s personal representative and plays a key role in church affairs across the country.

Pérez said, “I was filled with great joy today to learn that Pope Leo XIV has appointed Archbishop Gabriele Giordano Caccia as the new Apostolic Nuncio to the United States. He succeeds Cardinal Christophe Pierre following his retirement at age 80.” Pérez also reflected on his relationship with Cardinal Pierre: “His Eminence has served as the personal representative of the Holy Father in our country for almost 10 years. In this time, I have come to know Cardinal Pierre well. I cherish our friendship, his wise counsel, and his goodness to not only the Church in the United States, but also the Catholic Church of Philadelphia.”

Cardinal Pierre’s service included nearly five decades in Vatican diplomacy and involvement in major events such as organizing a digital encounter between Pope Leo XIV and young people at last year’s National Catholic Youth Conference in Indianapolis. “The Cardinal’s keen intellect, ready wit, and genuine piety will long be remembered by me and undoubtedly all the bishops of the United States with prayerful gratitude as he enjoys his well-earned and fruitful retirement,” Pérez said.

Pérez extended support for Archbishop Caccia: “On behalf of the entire Catholic Church of Philadelphia, I extend a warm welcome to Archbishop Caccia and pledge prayerful support for him as he carries out his responsibilities across the United States.” He added that he looks forward to working with Caccia after his service at the United Nations concludes.

The Archdiocese of Philadelphia provides outreach through agencies like Nutritional Development Services and Catholic Social Services for community support according to its official website. The Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul serves as its main worship site according to its official website. The archdiocese functions as a metropolitan see overseeing suffragan dioceses in Pennsylvania according to its official website and serves more than 1.3 million Catholics according to its official website. Its mission includes spreading the Gospel, building faith communities, and assisting others through charitable efforts according to its official website. Pérez has served as archbishop since his installation in 2020 according to its official website.

“May the Holy Spirit guide Archbishop Caccia and strengthen him in service to the people of God in the United States,” Pérez concluded.
