Archbishop Shelton J. Fabre ordained Deacon Cuong Le and Deacon David Vest to the transitional diaconate on April 11 at the Cathedral of the Assumption, according to an announcement on Apr. 13. The ordination marks a significant step for both men as they continue their path toward priesthood in the Archdiocese of Louisville.

The transitional diaconate is an important stage before becoming a priest, involving service and commitment within the Catholic Church. The archbishop addressed both ordinands during his homily, emphasizing their new responsibilities and spiritual mission.

“In ordination, deacons are configured to Jesus Christ the Servant,” Archbishop Fabre said. “The role of a deacon is a ministry of service rooted in the Gospel of Jesus Christ and the tradition of the Church.” He further explained that this ministry involves assisting at liturgies, caring for those in need, and supporting community life: “It is important to remember that diaconal ministry is not only to assist priests and bishops. But also, an essential part of the sacrament of holy orders.”

Fabre presented guidance from Scripture readings for Le and Vest: “Live in a way that is worthy of the call that you have received.” He continued by urging them always to reveal Christ through their actions: “Never forget that people should experience Jesus Christ through you as his deacon.” The archbishop also thanked families, laity, and fellow deacons for supporting these vocations.

The newly ordained deacons will serve in parishes while continuing formation toward priesthood—a process typically lasting about one year before final ordination. The Archdiocese provides pastoral care across central Kentucky parishes according to its official website. It promotes Catholic spiritual development through ministries focused on outreach according to its official website, maintains archives for research purposes according to its official website, aligns with Roman Catholic ecclesiastical structures according to its official website, seeks justice and compassion alongside faith-building activities according to its official website, and operates under leadership including consultative groups like Pastoral Council according to its official website.

Looking ahead, Deacons Le and Vest will continue serving local communities as they prepare for priestly ordination.
