Emma Rhodes, a third-grade teacher at St. Agnes School, is living out a dream by being selected as a 2024 Derby princess, following in the footsteps of her mother and older sister. Reflecting on her experience, Rhodes expressed, "I grew up hearing my mom talking about the program and how important it was to her. I understood how much of an impact it had on her and how special it was. I knew I wanted to be involved as well."

As part of the Kentucky Derby Festival royal court program, Rhodes and four other women serve as ambassadors for the Derby Festival, the city of Louisville, and the Commonwealth of Kentucky. Rhodes emphasized the importance of connecting with people from all walks of life during the festival events, stating, "No matter where you live, what color your skin, where you are from or religion, the one thing we have in common is our city, our community."

Rhodes highlighted the joy of having her students participate in some of the festival events, mentioning, "I really loved the Children’s Tea. Having my students there was so special." She also found the Pegasus Parade to be a memorable experience, noting the palpable excitement of attendees from various backgrounds.

Balancing her teaching responsibilities with her princess duties was made possible with the support of the St. Agnes administration and fellow teachers. Principal Jessica Young commended Rhodes, describing her as "bright, upbeat and positive," and expressed pride in seeing the strong connection between Rhodes and her students during the festival events.

Rhodes's involvement in the Kentucky Derby Festival has not only impacted her students but also the entire school community. Jessica Covington, a parent of one of Rhodes's students, praised her as a role model and shared her son's excitement about having a famous teacher, saying, "He is more interested in the festival (this year)."

In addition to the prestigious role, Derby princesses receive a $2,000 scholarship to assist with education expenses. Rhodes, who will graduate with a master's degree in elementary education from Bellarmine University, exemplifies academic excellence, maintaining a 3.0-grade point average.

Rhodes's journey from a student at St. Francis of Assisi School to a member of Assumption High School's class of 2017 and now a dedicated teacher at St. Agnes School showcases her commitment to education and community involvement. With her positive impact on her students and the broader community, Emma Rhodes continues to shine as a beacon of inspiration and leadership.
