Revered Carl A. Kemme, D.D. Bishop | Diocese of Witchita

Bishop Carl A. Kemme, speaking during a Mass of Healing and Repentance at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Wichita, emphasized the importance of accountability and transparency within the church. Reflecting on biblical references to vineyards, Bishop Kemme shared a personal anecdote about his grandfather's vineyard, stating, “Whenever I hear the words of today’s Gospel, I almost always think of my grandpa, who took great pride in a small vineyard on his farm, which he loved to tend so that he would provide lush and very sweet tasting grapes."

In his address, Bishop Kemme highlighted the symbolic significance of vineyards in the Bible, noting that throughout history, Israel has been compared to a vine, both fruitful and neglected. Drawing on the analogy of Jesus as the true vine, he emphasized the importance of pruning in spiritual growth, stating, “Pruning in our spiritual lives is taking stock of our lives and ridding ourselves of that which is useless, unproductive, and withered."

Acknowledging the dark reality of abuse within the church, Bishop Kemme expressed a commitment to creating a safe environment, stating, “Abuse in every form is a dead branch and we can have none of it in our church." He called for collective action to safeguard the vulnerable and to address past wrongdoings, emphasizing the need for repentance and a dedication to preventing future harm.

Encouraging a culture of vigilance and protection, Bishop Kemme urged the faithful to speak out against any form of misconduct or harm. He underscored the importance of trust in church representatives while emphasizing the necessity of verification to ensure a safe and nurturing environment for all members.

In conclusion, Bishop Kemme asked for prayers for all victims of abuse, calling for healing and justice. He concluded with a hopeful vision, stating, “May the church which is the vineyard of the Lord be continually pruned of violence and abuse, so that what remains is nothing but pure, holy, and full of life!"
